In 2007, the Austrian Mint began issuing a new series of gold collectible coins with a face value of 50 euro, dedicated to the famous doctors of Austria. The first coin of the series was released on January 31, 2007 and is dedicated to the famous Austrian doctor and enlightener Gerard van Sweeten.
The obverse of the golden coin of Austria depicts a portrait of Gerard van Sweeten with a book in his hand. On the left side is the face value of the 50 EURO coin, the year of issue of 2007, as well as the Asclepius staff present on all coins in the series. At the bottom of the obverse is the name of the country "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH" and at the top of the semicircle is the name of the doctor "GERARD VAN SWIETEN" and the years of his life "1700-1772."
The reverse depicts the facade of the building of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, under which the inscription "AKADEMIE DER WISSENSCHAFTEN" ("ACADEMY OF SCIENCES") is inscribed. Also on the right side of the coin is an illustration of a branch of a plant from the genus of deciduous trees of the Scroll, named after Gerard van Sweeten, and the inscription "SWIETENIA MAHAGONI" is present.
