On January 1, 2002, the Austrian Mint began issuing a collection gold coin with a face value of 25 euro from the Vienna Philharmonic series, replacing the previously issued coin with a face value of 500 Austrian shillings. The coin is made of gold of the highest sample and has a weight of 1/4 ounce.
The obverse of the coin depicts an organ installed in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Philharmonic, over which the inscription "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH" ("AUSTRIAN REPUBLIC") is inscribed in a semicircle. At the bottom of the obverse under the image is the weight of the 1/4 UNZE coin, the GOLD 999.9 metal sample and the year of minting. At the very bottom is the face value of the "25 EURO" coin.
The reverse of the Austrian "philharmonicer" of 25 euro depicts musical instruments used by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra: four violins, cello, horn, bassoon and harp. Above the composition is the inscription "WIENER PHILHARMONIKER" ("VIENNA PHILHARMONIC").
