Commemorative and anniversary coins 2 euro

Commemorative and anniversary coins of 2 euro have been issued by eurozone countries since 2004. The first such coin was minted by Greece and dedicated to the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. As a rule, the anniversary coins of the euro are dedicated to any important historical events and outstanding personalities. At the moment, 19 countries belonging to the eurozone have the right to issue commemorative coins of 2 euro, as well as four states using the euro as their currency, but not members of the EU - Andorra, Vatican, Monaco and San Marino.

In terms of their characteristics, commemorative coins are no different from coins of 2 euro of regular minting. They are also legal tender in the territory of all eurozone states. On the reverse of jubilee coins 2 euro is a map of Europe and a face value is indicated. As for the obverse, it can be any, however, there are certain requirements and restrictions.

Restrictions on the obverse of commemorative coins 2 euro:

    • the name or designation of the State issuing the coin must be indicated
    • year of issue must be specified
    • 12 EU stars must be present on the outer ring
    • the name and face value of the coin must not be printed

There are also restrictions on the number of commemorative and anniversary coins issued 2 euro. Thus, the circulation of these coins in one issue should not exceed 0.1% of the total number of regular coinage coins with a face value of 2 euro issued by all eurozone members and 5.0% of the total number of coins with a face value of 2 euro issued by a member state minting a commemorative coin.

Another rule is that each country has the right to issue only two anniversary coins per year. The exception is when coins are issued in a series by all eurozone countries and dedicated to any important pan-European event.

To date, there are four series of commemorative coins of 2 euro:

2007 - Roman Treaty series

2009 - series "10 years of the Economic and Monetary Union"

2012 - series "10 years of cash circulation Euro"

2015 - series "30 Years to the Flag of Europe"

In total, at the beginning of 2022, all countries issued 428 commemorative and anniversary coins with a face value of 2 euro.
