In the Netherlands, the euro was put into cash circulation in 2002, replacing the Dutch guilder. The euro coins of all denominations depict the profile of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, as well as the inscription "BEATRIX KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN" ("Beatrix Queen of the Netherlands").
After the abdication of Queen Beatrix in 2013 in favor of his eldest son Prince Willem-Alexander, the design of euro coins of the regular minting of the Netherlands has undergone changes. So on coins of all denominations now a portrait of the King of the Netherlands Willem-Alexander is depicted.
By 2022, the Netherlands issued 8 commemorative coins with a face value of 2 euro.
Collectible gold and silver coins in denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 euro are also issued annually.
